Backing Up Your Settings

While this article isn't specifically about die protection, it can help to ensure that you will be able continue to protect your dies - with little interruption - in the aftermath of a catastrophe.

Think about how much time you have invested in creating the program settings for your die protection sensors; not just the initial setup with sensor names, types, stop types, and timing, but also all of the little tweaks and adjustments that were made over time to fine tune the settings.

How many hours would it take you to replace this if it were suddenly lost?

At the very least, you should have a good written copy of all of the sensor settings in all of your controls. There is also a much better alternative: Make a digital backup copy.

If you have a Wintriss SmartPAC PRO or SmartPAC 2 control, the capability is already built in. Simply plug the SmartPAC into your existing Ethernet network, and specify a destination directory for your backup files using the SmartView Web Interface.

Once the destination directory has been set, go to the SmartPAC's Initialization menu and select "BACKUP/RESTORE" (see Figure 1).

You can check the date of the last backup by pressing the key on the right side of the SmartPAC's screen (see Figure 2). To perform a backup, press the F5 key. The SmartPAC will upload a copy of all of its setup information - including all initialization and optional module settings. This process may take several minutes.

In the event of a catastrophic event (such as a board failure caused by an electrical surge), the settings can be easily restored to the SmartPAC. Connect to the SmartPAC through the SmartView Web Interface, specify the network directory where the settings are stored, go back to the initialization menu on the SmartPAC, and press the key to restore the settings (See Figure 3).

If you do not wish to connect your controls to the network, a USB backup option is available for both the SmartPAC PRO and SmartPAC 2. To use this feature, simply plug a USB thumb drive into the USB port on the front of the SmartPAC PRO or SmartPAC 2's on-board USB port, go to the Initialization Menu, and follow the instructions above.
